Swinhoe Pheasants come from the forested mountain regions of central Taiwan and are most active in the early dawn hours and late afternoon. At night they will roost in the trees. They are considered among the rarer breeds of pheasants due to decreasing habitat. The popularity of this breed has increased as they are known to be generally calm, easy to tame, and very hardy.

Swinhoe Pheasants require a large aviary with plenty of cover and shade but do not need a lot of shelter due to their hardiness to both hot and cold temperatures. Their diet consists mainly of mixed grains and seeds, fresh greens, and grass, as well as fresh fruits such as berries and grapes. This diet should be supplemented with a standard game bird feed.

Swinhoe Pheasants are usually fertile at 1 year of age, with the breeding season starting in April and going through September. These birds do pair up, so 1 male should be kept with 1 female. Females will lay a clutch of 2-8 glossy-pink eggs with an incubation period of 25-28 days. The females will typically make a well-formed nest close to the base of a tree or under a rock.

Swinhoe males will grow to be around 31″ in overall length and females about 20″. About half of that length is their beautiful tails. Swinhoe Pheasants can live 15 years or more.
